Overworld stores its live exploration database on your device. The app does not require an account or include advertising or analytics SDKs. Optional exports and device backups can create copies outside the app, as described below.
Information Overworld stores
Overworld stores revealed map cells as integer grid coordinates and, when available, the time each cell was first revealed. These records support the explored map and map-history playback. The app also stores your settings.
Overworld does not retain raw GPS fixes, routes, speeds, or a continuous movement log. Cells created by older versions may not have a first-reveal time.
Location
Overworld requests Always location access so it can reveal nearby map cells while the app is open, in the background, or while the screen is off. The app uses location fixes on your device to decide which grid cells to reveal; it does not retain the raw fixes or send them to the developer. You can pause tracking in Overworld or change location access in iOS Settings at any time.
Map data
The app displays Apple Maps through Apple's MapKit framework. Apple services may process requests needed to provide maps and device location services under Apple's policies. Overworld does not operate its own map server.
Backups and exports
You may export a standard or password-protected .overworld backup. Current exports can contain revealed grid cells, optional first-reveal times, and format metadata. They do not contain raw GPS fixes, routes, or speeds. You choose where to save or share exported files, which may include a cloud or third-party storage provider configured on your device.
Standard backups are readable files. Password-protected backups use authenticated encryption, but Overworld cannot recover a forgotten password.
The live app database may be included in device backups according to your iOS and iCloud settings. Those backups are managed by Apple, not by Overworld.
Purchases
Overworld Pro purchases are handled by Apple through StoreKit. The developer does not receive your payment-card details. Apple provides the app with entitlement information needed to unlock purchased features.
Support communications
If you contact support, the developer receives the information you choose to include, such as your email address, message, and attachments. That information is used to respond to your request. Do not send an exported map unless support asks for it.
Sharing, retention, and deletion
Overworld does not automatically upload the live exploration database to the developer, and the developer does not sell map data. Apple handles map and purchase services, and any provider you choose handles files saved through the export sheet under its own terms.
You can erase explored areas within the app or delete the app and its local data through iOS. Exported files and device backups must be deleted separately from the locations where you chose to store them. Information voluntarily sent to support may remain in support email records as needed to handle the request.
Changes
This policy may be revised when Overworld's features or data practices change. The date above shows when it was last updated.
